DL3D have developed a V-Ray for 3ds Max compatible displacement/surface shader for creating realistic animated ocean surfaces.

This shader pack contains a displacement shader generating offshore ocean surface aspect, and foam, from physical parameters such as wind speed, swell amount, etc…

The model is based on physical oceanography, giving a realistic wave animation and look. It’s not based on Jerry Tessendorf’s method.

A surface shader is bundled with the displacement shader. This material is designed to be used in conjunction with the displacement shader. It simulates light absorption under different lighting conditions. It also handle caustics.

A real time viewport deformer plugin for 3ds Max and Maya is also bundled. It can be used for previsualization purposes, but also directly to represent the ocean surface.
